Welcome to Augmented Reality unboxing.
the presentation starts with a 1min video at the next screen
🦋🦋 what we delivered:
A tracker based Augmented Reality experience, deployed on instagram as a filter.
Users launch the filter by scanning a QR code.
The Augmented Reality experience is activated via a tracker. In this case, the tracker is a printed 2D graphic: the "Pith Desk Meadow" icon.
Users are able to move their smartphone camera as if the 3D object were really there in front of them and swipe left/right to rotate the object.
Users can record video or capture a still as normal.
Posting to instagram stories shows the filter title and creator; this is a special kind of @tag that allows additional engagement.
On the next screens we will share some information about Pith and how we celebrated their values with Augmented Reality.
🤝🏼 about the client:
Pith Supply design and manufacture sustainable materials for creative people;
a refined selection of Sketchbooks, Notebooks, Planners and Pads. Pith believe quality products shouldn't cost the earth.
✌🏼 central to this project:
Pith's initiative: "We plant, you plant".
In partnership with Sustainable Global Gardens, for each order placed through Pith's own website a tree is planted in East Africa. In addition, Pith encourage their customers to re-green locally. A Desk Meadow Seed Packet is included, free of charge, with all UK and EU orders.
Pith has established a strong visual identity and ways to share their values online in 2D.
beautifulbeautiful.xyz extended the brand's online presence into 3D that users can interact with.
We built on Pith's existing graphical identity and excellent unboxing experience. Via an instagram Augmented Reality filter we created another channel for customers to engage with and tell their friends about.
beautifulbeautiful.xyz created an immersive and shareable unboxing experience that leaves a strong impression.
50% of consumers would better recall brands that regularly engage them with immersive tech (source: accenture)

behind the scenes:
a project like this has 3 main sections:
[1] consult > ideate > outline
[2] assets > assemble > program
[3] prototype > optimise > deploy
[1] consult > ideate > outline
During consultation we ask about our client's goals. Over a series of emails and calls we learn about our client's needs and are able to ideate on their behalf. Before too long, we will develop a project outline that includes the following:
-> concept summary
-> user experience
-> deliverables
-> our process
[2] assets > assemble > program
To explain section [2] we are going to lean heavily on film/photo production analogies.

[2] assets > assemble > program
Creating assets is a bit like: casting talent, wardrobe styling, hair and makeup + prop making rolled into one. In our Digital Desk Meadow, the primary assets (or talent/props) are animated 3D models of plants and a mound of earth.
assets > light on hand painted 3D Material
[2] assets > assemble > program
When it's time to assemble you might think of it as dressing the set followed by a working rehearsal. Props are placed on set and the talent adjust their performance accordingly. When we assemble the Digital Desk Meadow, our assets are placed in Augmented Reality space and the user experience is drafted.
assemble > AR user guides up close
[2] assets > assemble > program
Programming is a bit like a technical rehearsal. The director has decided that when the lights go down the car will explode and the talent walk away calmly. So the Assistant Director sets a meeting with the Cinematographer, the Pyrotechnics expert, the Spark (electrician) and the on-set Medics. During the course of the meeting they agree on a system of timings, rules and failsafes for the explosion sequence. The program for our digital desk meadow assures that, even if things don't go as planned, everyone gets a good experience - and the medics aren't required.
program > user interactivity and runtime logic
[3] prototype > optimise > deploy
A bit like a full dress rehearsal. Our client is provided with a working prototype of the experience, shared via a private link. We welcome feedback and make adjustments as required.
We test the experience in different scenarios and optimise the code to ensure the target audience has a good experience, even those on older devices.
Finally, deployment is when the experience goes live and we ensure everything at the periphery of the experience is functioning correctly. For example, there was a strange complication on a Pixel 6 that resulted in the QR code link for the Digital Desk Meadow not working correctly 50% of the time. We found a solution for that before Pith's pop-up event.
🤝
On the next screen, read and hear a testimonial from Pith's founder and creative director: Liam Goward.

on Augmented Reality unboxing
"We wanted to extend our unboxing experience and engagement with the "We plant, you plant" campaign with augmented reality. Experience is everything for us; our paper feels incredible in your hands; our books are bound with exposed lay flat binding, which is unique; and our products are about creating inspirational moments. Augmented reality is a way for us to add another layer of richness to our brand and for our customers to experience that while unboxing their orders."
on working with beautifulbeautiful.xyz
"The process with beautifulbeautiful.xyz was super easy and fun. it was really cool to see the desk meadow graphic that i had originally created transform into an animated 3d object. We regularly discussed how that would look and we were constantly talking about Nintendo 64 and Playstation 1 as a reference point for how that aesthetic could be; and I'm really, really happy to say that the Desk Meadow looks like it could've been taken directly out of the Legend of Zelda. It took us a few iterations to get the right feel and eventually we landed on what you can see here."
on additional use cases for AR
"in late 2021 we launched our first popup shop to celebrate our birthday; and, right around that time, we unnoficially launched the digital desk meadow filter on instagram. We had the tracker setup on its own stand and it was well recieved by everybody that attended the event. it was really cool to see people interacting with something, although not in its original intention of the unboxing experience, but everybody's interest was amazing and it was great to see people sharing it and getting a live reaction from people."
